Kenny Planning and Design Framework
All enquiries about the Kenny land release program should be directed to the Land Development Agency.
EPD's role was to undertake the preliminary planning/concept work and then hand over to the Land Development Agency to finalise and release.
The suburb of Kenny is identified as a future residential area in the East Gungahlin Structure Plan. Kenny is ultimately expected to accommodate around 3000 dwellings along with commercial development, community facilities and open space.
A background investigation study was completed in 2010. The study considered Kenny's community and recreation needs, bushfire risk, traffic and transport needs, geology and land features, infrastructure (including water, sewer, gas, electricity and telecommunications, stormwater) and environmental factors. The outcomes from this study are being incorporated into the next development stage for this new suburb, as part of the Planning and Design Framework project.
Project area and surrounds
Kenny is an undeveloped suburb located in East Gungahlin with an area of around 330 hectares (3,300,000 m2). The map below shows the location of Kenny and its surrounding suburbs. Kenny is accessible by Morisset Road to the south, Horse Park Drive to the north-east, Federal Highway to the south-east and Well Station Drive to the north.
Nearby land uses include Bimberi Youth Justice Centre, Exhibition Park in Canberra (EPIC), Canberra Race Course, Mitchell Waste Transfer Station, residential development in Harrison and the Goorooyarroo Nature Reserve.
Close to the Gungahlin Town Centre and major transport routes, the recently developed suburb of Harrison consists predominantly of medium density housing. The undeveloped suburb of Throsby, to the north of Kenny, is identified by the Territory Plan for future development. To the west of Kenny is the light-industrial suburb of Mitchell. This area has progressively developed since the 1970s as a centre of industrial trades, warehousing and specialist retail for Canberra. The suburb of Watson is situated to the south of Kenny and includes recently built medium density areas and older low density housing.
The development of Kenny aims to respond to growing housing demands in Canberra over the next ten years. The Kenny planning and design project is intended to guide the development of Kenny to become a sustainable place: environmentally, economically, socially and culturally. It is vital that future land use and infrastructure reflects the interests of Canberrans and responds to identified current and future needs.
Kenny is identified in the Territory Plan as a Future Urban Area. The Territory Plan is the key statutory planning document in the ACT, providing the framework for planning in the ACT.
The objective of this project is to prepare a planning and design framework on behalf of the ACT Government to guide the development of Kenny and create a place where people will want to live.
There is no community consultation at present.
