Definitions

Many terms have a defined meaning under legislation. These terms are normally shown in italics.

Basic paling fence Defined in the Planning and Development Act 2007
Boundary clearance area For a side boundary or rear boundary of a block, means the area between the boundary and a line drawn 1.5m inside the block and parallel to the boundary.
Building code The ACT building code is made under the Building Act 2004. It outlines minimum standards for the safety, health, amenity and sustainability of new building work, including work on existing buildings. Building line Defined in Territory Plan – Part 13 Definitions
Class of a building Means the classification of the building under the National Construction Code. More information on building classifications is available in the National Construction Code at the Australian Building Codes website. Understanding the NCC provides a helpful guide.

Relevant cross section area When referring to a building or structure partially or fully within a boundary clearance area, means the area of the largest cross-section of the building or structure at any point in the area when measured in a plane parallel to the boundary.
