Architect registration


Registering as an architect in the ACT will allow you to advertise your services legally and to call yourself an architect. You must register under the Architects Act 2004 and meet all the eligibility requirements.

Eligibility

Applications for architect registration require review by the ACT Architects Board.

To be considered for registration you will need:

Interstate licence holders

You may be able to apply for an ACT registration if you’re already registered in another state or territory. Find out more about mutual recognition.

Architectural practice examination

In addition to holding a Bachelor's Degree in Architecture, you must successfully complete the architectural practice examination (APE). The APE is a three-part process consisting of:

  1. a log book
  2. a written examination paper
  3. an examination by interview

Note, you can start an online application and save it to return to later. Your application won’t be submitted until the documents are lodged and fee paid.

If an application is incomplete, or a delegate requires more information, the assessment of an application can take considerably longer. Requests for more information will be sent to an applicant by email in the first instance.

Timeframe

Assessment timeframes will depend on the availability of scheduled ACT Architects Board meetings. Assessments of applications will not be fast tracked in any circumstances. Consider the timeframe when planning to undertake work requiring a registration in the ACT.
