• The ACT has now aligned with the Australian Geospatial Reference System (AGRS).
  • Geocentric Datum of Australia 2020 (GDA2020) is the official horizontal datum for the ACT.
  • Map Grid of Australia 2020 (MGA2020) zone 55 is the official projection for the ACT. MGA2020 replaces the ACT Standard Grid Coordinates (SGC).

ACT datum and projection

To align the ACT with the modernised Australian Geospatial Reference System, the ACT adopted the Geocentric Datum of Australia 2020 (GDA2020) and the Map Grid of Australia 2020 (MGA2020) zone 55 UTM projection for all surveying and spatial data applications on 1 July 2023.

With the adoption of GDA2020 in the ACT, MGA2020 zone 55 coordinates will replace ACT Standard Grid Coordinates (SGC) as the mapping projection. All existing SGC data and tools will remain available for use, and SGC may now be considered a working surface.

The official height datum for Australia is the Australian Height Datum 1971 (AHD71).

Historical ACT datum information

Prior to the adoption of GDA2020 in the ACT:

  • the horizontal datum was the Australian Geodetic Datum 1966 (AGD66)
  • the projection was the ACT Standard Grid
  • the coordinate system was Standard Grid Coordinates (SGC).

There were three separate coordinate zones within the ACT Standard Grid:

  • Standard Grid Coordinates/Adjusted Grid Coordinates (SGC/AGC)
  • Standard Grid Coordinates/Preliminary Grid Coordinates (SGC/PGC)
  • Standard Grid Coordinates/City Coordinates (SGC/CC).
