Canberra is growing fast, and the Canberra House Pattern Book will help build high-quality, sustainable and affordable homes, as the city works towards 30,000 new homes by 2030.

Quality, adaptable homes for every stage of life

The Canberra House Pattern Book will change how missing middle housing gets built in Canberra, making it easier to deliver high-quality homes like dual and tri occupancies, terraces and townhouses across Canberra. The book will offer a library of pre-qualified, well-designed home designs, paired with a faster path through planning.

The project is currently in its first stage. Expressions of interest are now open for architects and building designers to take part in a national design competition seeking housing solutions for dual occupancies, tri-occupancies, townhouses and terraces. Selected concepts will help inform the Canberra House Pattern Book, creating a library of high-quality housing designs for future use in Canberra.

The Design Competition also includes a dedicated student category, giving Master of Architecture students the opportunity to test their ideas against a real-world design brief and showcase their work alongside emerging and established professionals. Two student winners will each receive a $5,500 (Iclu. GST) prize.

Once complete, the Pattern Book will give you access to:

  • New home designs developed by architects and building designers through a national design competition
  • A fast-tracked, pre-qualified planning pathway
  • Design options suited to a range of block types
  • Homes that suit a range of lifestyles and life stages
