The ACT Government is developing integrated land-use and transport plans along light rail and key rapid bus corridors in Canberra. This is intended to enable transit-oriented development (TOD) by supporting more well-located housing close to transport and services, employment, and community facilities.
Enabling more housing along public transport corridors will create a better-connected, accessible and sustainable city. Transport oriented development has several benefits over suburban development, such as creating vibrant mixed-use communities, walkable neighbourhoods, reducing urban sprawl and reliance on cars by residents, making better use of existing infrastructure and supporting more frequent transport services. Additionally, allowing for human scale density will ensure that new developments are both liveable and community friendly.
