The ACT Government is committed to reintroducing government building certifiers to offer an alternative to private certifiers in the building certification process. This new service will run on a competitive, fee-for-service basis to maintain a level playing field between government and private certifiers.
The change replaces earlier plans to create a team of building assurers in Access Canberra from 1 July 2025. While the approach has changed, the goal remains the same: to strengthen oversight, prevent defects, and give consumers confidence that buildings in the ACT are safe and well-built.
What happens next?
Work on the new service is already underway. In 2025, the government will consult with industry and community groups to help shape how the service is designed and delivered. The focus will be on making sure it is practical and sustainable, so it meets the needs of consumers and the building sector—both now and into the future.
More updates will be provided as work progresses. If you have any questions, please email EPSDDBuildingReform@act.gov.au.
